A New Website

Anyone who isn’t embarrassed of who they were last year, probably isn’t learning enough
— Alain de Botton

I find it hard to look through my old work.

I see mistakes.

I see things I should, or could, have done differently. Done...better?

It seems like a common trait among people working on anything creative, that necessitates we put an element of ourselves into our work.

Navigating my archive, sure, I see some stuff that I'm proud of. I see faces I'm glad to have had in front of my camera and I enjoy the memories of many of those experiences.

But...there's 'the gap'.

A gap between were I was, where I am, and where I want to be.

This gap used to get me down, and leave me a bit despondent.

As I get older, that story has flipped in my head. As I get more experience, maybe eve a bit more mature, it's reassuring.

When the gap is there, I know I'm not resting on my laurels, or satisfied with where I am. It means I'm moving.

I'm thinking about the next step.

The next job, and the next photo.

The next website.

They all need to be better, to progress, to keep moving, forwards.

This new website is a snapshot of the journey that has led me to today.

It's been a ride I couldn't have imagined when Iain and I were making pinhole cameras for fun down at Portencross beach.

Similarly, this site is better than I could have imagined, and for that I have massive gratitude for the champions at Walnut Wasp; Gail, David and Gavin. Love you guys.

Thanks to them for building, and thanks to you for looking.

Here's to the next steps.

Big love

Euan

The Gap by Ira Glass is a short and now fairly famous monologue of the creative process and provided plenty of inspiration for this blog post.
