The Wash House Garden

Food can be a vehicle for social change.
It brings people together in a way that very few other activities can.

In the shadow of the defunct Tollcross Steamie, Max Johnson broke ground and established The Wash House Garden. Hidden in the heart of Glasgow’s old industrial east end, the community garden sets out to create community and provide produce for locals and Glasgow businesses. This is a project borne of heart and passion and maintained by determination of spirit. I met Max via a mutual friend and on hearing about The Wash House Garden, felt compelled to try and get involved in some way. My gardening chops barely extend to keeping the basil plant in my kitchen alive, so spending time there with my camera seemed to make more sense. Over several trips and a few seasons, I met volunteers, got a little sunburn, and felt waves of inspiration from the people and the place in documenting this wonderful little bubble in heart of Glasgow.

You can read more about Max and the garden in this interview.

A business should be good for the people who are working on it. And good for your community.
